Unpacking the Ingredients of the Recipe

1. Understanding Identity and Perception

Maps shared that growing up, he did not fully understand the public identity of his father, Marks Maponyane, a famous footballer. As he became more aware, he began to question the intentions behind relationships in his life.

This early experience shaped his ability to read people and situations, giving him both an advantage and a burden. It taught him that not all attention is genuine, and that discernment is essential when building a personal brand.

2. Authenticity Comes First

When asked about building his personal brand, Maps highlighted two key principles. The first is authenticity. His brand is rooted in being genuinely himself. He emphasises that the moment he overthinks his style or presentation, it becomes clear that something is off. Authenticity is not a strategy; it is a standard.

3. Stay Ahead of the System

The second principle is maintaining an edge. Maps believes in staying ahead of whatever system he operates in, whether that is media, business, or social platforms. This forward-thinking approach ensures that he remains relevant and competitive without relying on trends alone.

4. Create Meaningful Impact

Maps are intentional about the work he produces. His goal is not to simply occupy space, but to create something that matters.

“If you want to leave a legacy, write something worth reading or do something worth writing about.”

This mindset shifts personal branding from visibility to value.

5. Lean into your Uniqueness

Maps attributes his uniqueness to his knowledge and curiosity. Known by friends as “Google Maps,” he embraces his ability to think differently and explore unconventional ideas.

Rather than rigid long-term planning, he focuses on daily execution and progress, asking how much he can achieve today instead of over planning the future.

6. Build Habits that Support Excellence

One of the most practical insights from the session is the role of habits in maintaining a strong personal brand. Maps highlights meditation to start the day with clarity, before engaging with distractions like social media. He also emphasises structured routines that reduce unnecessary mental friction, allowing him to operate with confidence throughout the day.

Preparation, in his view, is everything. Whether getting dressed or preparing for a meeting, having a system ensures that he shows up at his best without second guessing himself.

7. Choose Brand Partnerships with Integrity

Maps have a clear framework for deciding which brands to work with. Every opportunity must align with his values, identity, and long-term direction.

He asks himself key questions:

  1. Do I believe in it?
  2. Is it authentic to who I am?
  3. Would I actually use it?
  4. Does it align with where I am going?
  5. Does it benefit others?

If too many answers are no, he walks away, regardless of financial incentive.

He shared that he has turned down lucrative deals, including offers from tobacco brands, because they do not align with who he is or what he stands for. For Maps, short term money is never worth long-term misalignment.

8. Position Yourself as an Authority

Maps emphasises the importance of being known for something. Building authority in a specific area strengthens your personal brand and creates trust with your audience. However, this comes with responsibility. Your views and actions must remain consistent with that identity. Inconsistency can quickly damage credibility.

Ultimately, Maps reached a point where he no longer felt the need to impress others. This shift allowed him to operate with confidence and alignment, building a brand that reflects who he truly is.
