What happens when AI takes over traditional classroom teaching? A US-based school is using AI to personalise learning and reimagine how students spend their day.

What happens when AI takes over traditional classroom teaching? Alpha School, a private school network in the United States, is testing that question every day. Its students complete their core academic learning with AI-powered software in approximately two hours each morning, then spend the rest of the day with human guides who focus on life skills, confidence and creativity.

The model is gaining attention for its results and for the debate it has started about what AI means for teachers. Alpha's own answer is that AI has changed what the adults in the building do, rather than removing them. Here is how the school day works, and what we take from it.

AI Powers Academic Learning

Academic instruction at Alpha runs on AI-powered adaptive apps. Each student follows a personalised learning path through the core subjects and works at their own pace. A learner who has mastered a concept moves on, and one who needs more time gets it.

This takes lecturing, marking and managing a full classroom off the adults in the room. Their time goes to the students instead of the content.

Just Two Hours Daily for Academics

Core academics, including mathematics, english, science and history, are completed in a focused block of around two hours each morning. Because the software adapts to each student, that time is spent on what they still need to learn rather than on what they already know.

Humans Still Play a Key Role

Alpha does not employ teachers in the traditional sense. Instead, adults act as guides: full-time staff on campus every day who help students stay motivated, build confidence and develop important life skills. Some guides are experienced classroom teachers, while others come from backgrounds such as coaching, counselling and business.

According to Alpha, guides start on a minimum salary of $100,000, and every student has a weekly 30-minute one-on-one meeting with a guide. The guide role covers three things:

Afternoons Focus on Real-World Skills

With academics done by lunchtime, the rest of the day is spent on creativity, entrepreneurship, leadership, teamwork and hands-on projects. These are the skills that are hardest to learn from a screen, and the ones students rely on most once they leave school.

A Glimpse of the Future?

Alpha School is gaining attention for its results, but also sparking debate about what AI means for the future of education.

Even so, the model raises a practical question for every school and organisation: once technology can deliver the content, how should people spend their time?

If AI can deliver the lesson, the most valuable part of the school day becomes the time people spend with each other.

Does the Model Work?

Most of what is known about Alpha comes from the school itself. Independent reporting adds some useful context. Reporting on Yahoo News, citing CNN, notes that the school has attracted criticism and concerns about a lack of independent research, and that tuition ranges from $10,000 to $75,000 a year. Coschool points out that Alpha’s academic results come from internal data, with no independent research yet verifying its claims.

Some researchers also question how new the approach is. In a March 2026 CBS News Chicago report on Alpha’s new Chicago campus, Liz Gerber of Northwestern University’s Center for Human-Computer Interaction and Design described it as personalised learning, an idea educators have worked with for years.

None of this settles whether the model works. It does mean the results are worth watching as more campuses open and outside researchers begin to study them.

TIM PERSPECTIVE

People and Technology, Working Together

At Tim Africa, we believe the real opportunity with AI isn't simply replacing people, but rethinking how people and technology can work together.

Alpha School is a story about AI in classrooms, and also a story about redesigning human roles around technology. Alpha’s model is a clear example of that thinking. The software takes on the repeatable work, and people are freed up for mentoring, motivation and the conversations that build confidence. We see the same pattern in business: the teams getting the most from AI are the ones redesigning their roles around it. If you are working out what that looks like for your organisation, let’s talk.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. Does Alpha School replace teachers with AI?

Alpha says no. AI delivers the academic lessons, while full-time human guides focus on motivation, relationships, life skills and getting to know each student.

2. How long do Alpha students spend on academics?

Around two hours each morning, working through personalised learning paths in AI-powered software.

3. What do students do for the rest of the day?

Afternoons focus on real-world skills such as creativity, entrepreneurship, leadership, teamwork and hands-on projects.

4. What can businesses learn from Alpha’s approach?

That AI works best when roles are redesigned around it. Hand the repeatable work to technology, and put people where judgement, relationships and coaching matter most.
