In Episode 46 of The Incredible Machines Podcast, hosts Jon Oliff and Luke Holden are joined by Laura Jane Thomas, an award-winning CMO, brand strategist, and founder of The Aligned Woman Co.
This episode is an honest exploration of what it truly means to rebuild your life with purpose. From the highs of entrepreneurial leaps to the humbling reality of burnout and learning to ask for help. Laura shares how 13 years of running her agency, Salt and Candy, alongside personal loss, divorce, and a near-breaking point became the turning point for something far greater. She founded a women's education platform designed to close the gaps that school, university, and life never filled.
Whether you're an entrepreneur, a woman navigating career or her identity, or someone quietly burning out, this episode will resonate deeply and leave you with the tools and language to start doing the real work.
Laura introduces the cornerstone of The Aligned Woman Co.'s flagship course: the ALIVE Method Blueprint. This framework was born directly from Laura's own healing journey. It stands for Awareness, Liberation, Intention, Vision, and Embodiment.
Each module within the course is taught by vetted experts such as doctors, PhDs, and seasoned professionals, ensuring that the women who go through it receive credible education.
After 13 years of hiring women fresh out of university, Laura saw a consistent pattern: brilliant, ambitious young women with no practical tools for navigating the real world.
"There needs to be an easier way. And there wasn't. So, I made one."
She identified a profound gap and decided to fill it. The Aligned Woman Co.'s Blueprint course covers 16 modules over four months, with everything from gynecology to leadership, legal literacy, money mindset, and personal branding. Every expert is vetted and credentialed. Together, they form something that has never existed before in KZN.
Her agency origin story is equally hilarious and inspiring. One day a friend invited her to a meeting with an American entrepreneur launching Coca-Cola Roll Call in South Africa. She agreed to "wingman" her friend and by the end of the night, she invented Salt and Candy.
"I just saw my opportunity and took it."
The agency's name? Laura was inspired by a date who poured M&Ms into her sacred salted popcorn. What seemed like a catastrophe turned into something incredible. That's the whole philosophy: take two things that shouldn't go together and create something entirely new and recognizable. The agency has now been running for 13 years.
One of the most recurring themes in this episode is the act of vulnerability. For Laura Thomas asking for help felt like failure, but it wasn’t. It was the beginning of a new journey, and everything was going to change for the better.
Laura describes becoming a softer and more empathetic person as a result. She credits that transformation as the very reason The Aligned Woman Co. exists today.
“If I could just help one woman not have to go through
what I went through, my job here is done.”
~ Laura Jane Thomas
Allan Grey 2008 “Beautiful” Campaign: Laura selected the iconic Elán 2008 ad. A beautifully human piece built around two lines that stopped the room: "My papa told me two important things. Always look for potential. And then have the patience to wait for it."
For Laura, this is both a professional philosophy and a personal one. Her ability to see what something could become has been her greatest asset. Paired with patience, it has defined her career.
"A lot of my success has come from the fact that I'm able to see potential where other people can't."
